Nhatrang Overview
Nha Trang is one of the most important tourist hubs of Vietnam, thanks to its beautiful beaches with fine and clean sand and clear ocean water with mild temperature all year round.
There are several resorts (Vinpearl, Diamond bay, Ana Mandara), amusement and water parks in this city and on islands off the coast. The most beautiful streets of the city are Tran Phu Street along the seaside. U.S. tourist calls it the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) of Vietnam.
Nha Trang is a venue for annual sailing boat racing from Hong Kong. In recent years, the city has welcomed many 5-star sea cruises. The city’s cuisine is famous for its fresh seafoods and famous BBQ pork rolled in rice paper. The area's Bird's nest soup is deemed one of the best in Vietnam. Bird’s nests are collected naturally and in bird’s farms in the islands off the city coast and in some houses in the inner city. This kind of bird belongs to swiftlet group, popularly yến hàng. In addition to the sailing boat racing, Nha Trang has a wealth of tourist activities for visitors. Island hopping, scuba diving, water sports and many other great beach resort community activities can be had here in Nha Trang.
Most days between 5.00-8.00, Nha Trang beach is filled with local people taking in the fresh sea breeze, socializing, playing soccer, badminton or practicing Tai chi. Most people in Nha Trang still walk or use the bicycle as their means of transport, which adds to the tranquility of the town. In the South China Sea, directly off Nha Trang, you'll find 20 small islands well worth a day trip.
At Tam Island, 30 minutes from Nha Trang, you can see the basket boats or 'thung chai' which are used by the locals. Rowed standing up, these circular baskets can carry as many as five people.
Back in Nha Trang take a look at the Cham Towers of Po Nagar. Build around the 10th Century, no one really knows how these towers were build, but one theory is that the bricks were laid wet then a fire was lit around the outside to bake them in.
Just three kilometres away is the Longson Pagoda, colourfully decorated onthe outside with ceramic dragons. Inside you'll find the 'The Goddess with 1,000 Heads and 1,000 Eyes’. According to Buddhist belief, she's all seeing and all knowing.
If you want your own 'all seeing' tour of the city, hitch a ride in a cyclo. Clyclos are the Vietnamese equivalent of the Indian cycle rickshaws, except that the people riding the cyclo are in front of the peddler.
